"Gladiator" Composer Accused of Copyright Infringment
Hans Zimmer, Gladiator composer, is being sued by the Holst Foundation over the film's Oscar-nominated score.
Holst Foundation allege that the score is a copy of the late Gustav Holst's famous "Planet Suite".

In an email, Peter Carter, a partner at Finers Stephens Innocent, confirmed that G&I Holst Ltd. and music publisher G. Schirmer Ltd. issued proceedings in the High Court in London on April 12, 2006, alleging that part of Zimmer's Gladiator soundtrack infringes copyright on the opening movement of The Planets, "Mars, the Bringer of War."

"The Planets" ist nicht umsonst das bedeutendste Werk von Gustav Holst. Der Entwurf des ersten Satzes "Mars, the bringer of war" wurde unmittelbar vor dem 1. Weltkrieg beendet. Es ist das imposanteste Stück aus dem Werk und beeindruckt durch seine Rhythmik, welche die Bedrohung des Krieges expressiv und mit viel Kraft vermittelt. So hat sich auch Hans Zimmer den ersten Satz zum Vorbild genommen und mit ihm eine Schlacht aus Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" untermalt.

That rousing Oscar-nominated music from Gladiator is now stirring up a legal battle worthy of Maximus himself. The Holst Foundation and music publisher G Schirmer have issued legal proceedings alleging that part of Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack bears an uncanny likeness to Gustav Holst’s Mars, the Bringer of War. The Holst Foundation would get a tidy sum if it won the case on behalf of the English composer, who died in 1934.
