You get known to real people and can share your thoughts and find other interesting blogs, which leads to improving your skills and getting new ideas for your own blog posts.
2. SEO - Search Engine Rankings
You get known to Search Engines which leads to better rankings and results which again leads to more visits of real people.

But how to choose which platform to use. You can for reason 1 compare the features of the sites. In this example mybloglog and blogcatalog have at the moment many bloggers which have an account on both sites, so you can only decide based on features like: Mybloglog has good tracking, Blogcatalog has a Discussions section which gives you the chance to ask questions to other bloggers and improves your visibility to the real people.

If you want to decide based on reason 2 - the Search Engine Optimization you have to compare the values based on SEO Search Engine Rankings the sites have. Lets take our example and compare mybloglog.com to blogcatalog.com
